An Austrian relief army under Wurmser rushed to the city and set up defensive positions at San Giorgio, but Masséna drove them into the city, adding to the strain on the garrison's resources. 4,000 Austrians died of wounds or disease in the next six weeks. The figure saluting General Bonaparte is probably the conte di Miollis, Brigadier General of the Army of Italy, made governor of the city when Mantua fell to the French in 1797. Published in A.V.
