Trimmed to platemark and tipped into album sheet William D'Avenant (1606-1668) was appointed Poet Laureate by Charles I in 1638, hence the bayleaves he wears on his head. He was satirised by various literary rivals, most of whom singled out the fact that his nose had been affected by syphilis.
