William D'Avenant (1606-1668) was appointed Poet Laureate by Charles I in 1638, hence the bayleaves he wears on his head. He was satirised by various literary rivals, most of whom singled out the fact that his nose had been affected by syphilis. Frontispiece to 'The works of Sir William D'Avenant : consisting of those which were formerly printed and those which he design'd for the press now published out of the authors original copies.
