Sir Percy Egerton Herbert (1822-1876) was a British Army officer and politician. He served in Crimea at the Battle of the Alma and the siege of Sevastopol and the Battle of Inkerman. He was made aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria, a Companion of the Order of the Bath and a colonel for his services in the Crimean War. He also received knighthoods from the Turkish, Sardinian and French governments. In 1858 he was made Lieutenant-Colonel and commanded regiments in Rohilkhand, Cawnpore and Fatehpur. Two years later he became deputy quartermaster-general at the Horse Guards and entered parliament in 1865 as Conservative MP for South Shropshire. By 1869 he had progressed further through the ranks and was made Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. NPG: D35705/6.

George Carr Glyn (1797-1873), 1st Baron Wolverton; a partner in the family firm of Glyn, Mills and Company, which was reputed to be the largest private bank in London, with extensive interests in the railways. By the 1850s, over 200 railway companies, both domestic and foreign, banked with them. He was chairman of the North Midland Railway (1836), of the London and Birmingham Railway (1837), and of the London and North Western Railway (1846). In 1852 he was a promoter of the Grand Trunk Railway in Canada. Glyn also served as Member of Parliament for Kendal from 1847-1868.

A philathropist, he helped set up schools for sailors and was a benefactor of the Merchant Seamen's Orphan Asylum, the Dreadnought Hospital and the Poplar Hospital.

Joseph Locke (1805-1860) was a civil engineer and was apprenticed to the railway engineer George Stephenson. He was particularly associated with railway projects and dominated this scene alongside Robert Stephenson and Brunel, as one of the major pioneers of railway development. He was part of the surveying team and group of engineers on the developments of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, Lancaster & Carlisle Railway, and the Manchester & Sheffield Railway. In the south he was responsible for working on the London and South Western Railway, including the designs of Richmond Railway Bridge (1848, but since replaced) and Barnes Bridge (1849). He was also involved in planning and building many railways in Europe, including the Le Havre, Rouen, Paris rail link, the Barcelona to Mataro line and the Dutch Rhenish Railway. Between 1857 and 1859 he was President of the Institution of Civil Engineers and in 1847 he served as MP for Honiton in Devon. Science Museum: 10302032.

Sir Francis Grant was educated at Harrow, and intended to make his career in the legal profession; however his love of art and fox-hunting turned him aside to become a painter. His equestrian portraits and portraits of aristocrats led to royal patronage, including that of Queen Victoria. He became president of the R.A. see E.F. Wilder, 'English Sporting Prints', pp.142-3.

Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne (1780-1863) was Chancellor of the Exchequer at the tender age of 25. He served as a Whig under eight prime ministers, becoming Lord President of the Council and the friend and political confidante of Queen Victoria, from whom he declined a dukedom in 1857. Like his father, the 3rd Marquess built up an outstanding art collection and delighted in entertaining friends and colleagues at Bowood.

Sir Tatton Sykes (1772-1863), 4th Baronet, on horseback. A landowner and stock breeder, his interest in horse racing led him to walk from London to Epsom to see the Derby in 1791. In 1846 Harry Hall painted him leading in a horse named 'Sir Tatton Sykes' after its St Leger win.

Portrait of Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston (1784-1865), politician who served twice as Prime Minister. He was in government office almost continuously from 1807 until his death in 1865, beginning his parliamentary career as a Tory and concluding it as a Liberal. He served successively as: Secretary at War (1809-28); Foreign Secretary (1830-41 and 1846-51); Home Secretary (1853-5) and Prime Minister (1855-8 and 1859-65). He is best remembered for his direction of British foreign policy through a period when the United Kingdom was at the height of its colonial power. His vigorous policy of intervention, often controversial at the time, made him one of the greatest Victorian statesman and among the most powerful figures in European politics.
