Flora Macdonald (1722 - 1790), Scottish Jacobite heroine who helped Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender, claimant to the British throne, to escape from Scotland after his defeat in the Jacobite rebellion of 1745-46. She was wife of Allan Macdonald of Kingsburgh. A very decorative and rare large image. Head and shoulders young woman with curly brown hair turned to the left. She is dressed in a gown with a lace collar, tartan, and a necklace. Her hair is heavily adorned with dark plumes. Early state, with the painter and engraver names only, and 'The Scottish Jacobite Heroine.' The British Musuem have a later state on thier website.
