Extremities of binding scuffed and rubbed. Light staining to some plates, interior generally good. Dedication leaf almost detached.
The author sailed from Lisbon to Rio in 1821, visiting the Swiss settlement of Nova Friburgo. He then boarded an American brig destined for Chile and Peru, and at Callao he took another ship to the Sandwich Islands. Includes a folding map of the Sandwich Islands and colour plates depicting Peruvian women. Abbey calls for four plates, but the copy in the Hill collection contains only three, as this copy.

A scene from the British invasion of Martinique during the Napoleonic Wars. L'Amphitrite, a 44-gun Armide class frigate commanded by François Denis de Keredern de Trobriand, was carrying despatches from Napoleon for the governor of Martinique. Arriving in the 3rd February Trobriand fought his way through the British bloackade into Fort-de-France harbour, cutting the corvette shown here in two. He landed his men then blew his frigate up to prevent her capture. Both French and English reports of the action complimented his bravery. The crew joined the garrison of Fort Desaix and Trobriand was killed during the British bombardment. Part of the hull of l'Amphitrite was discovered in 1960: artifacts were salvaged and put on display at the 'Service Régional de l'Archéologie'.

Fine impression of this splendid view of a sheep and livestock market in the West Sussex town of Chichester, printed on paper watermarked 'J. Whatman'. The famous Chichester Cross, built by the local bishop in the late 15th century, is clearly visible in the centre background of the composition. The armorial in the centre of the letterpress is that of Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond and Lennox [1764 - 1819], to whom the print is dedicated. By Joseph Francis Gilbert [1792 - 1855], painter who in 1813 was residing at High Street, Portsmouth, and exhibited at the Royal Academy a ‘Landscape and Figures.’ In 1814 he sent ‘The Rustic Traveller crossing the Style,’ and occasionally exhibited in the following years. Subsequently he removed to Sussex, and resided for many years at Chichester. He continued to exhibit at the British Institution, Suffolk Street, Royal Manchester Institution, and other exhibitions, principally views in Sussex.

William Burton Conyngham (1733-96), a Commissioner of the Treasury for Ireland from 1793, who began the construction of Slane Castle. He presented the Trinity College Harp to the college, which was used as a Guinness trade mark in 1876 and as the model for the insignia of the Irish Free State and the Republic of Ireland in 1922. Irish and American interest. Stuart (1755-1828), an American painter known for his portraits of the first six presidents of the USA (including the portrait of Washington on the $1 bill), is called Gilbert Charles today but engravings after him are often signed C.G. For this portrait only Conyngham's face was taken from Stuart's oil of c.1792.

He was made lord chancellor in 1658 , and elected chancellor of Oxford University in 1660. He is chiefly remembered, however, for writing what has been described (DNB) as 'the most sophisticated and finely balanced history yet written in English'. His account of the Civil War, 'History of the Rebellion' (published posthumously, 1702-4) is 'a distinctive work of art based on a highly wrought style, a forensic dissection of character and issue, and a sense of the individuals' moral responsibility for their actions'. Sir John Gilbert (1817 - 1897) taught himself to paint. Skilled in several media, he gained the nickname, 'the Scott of painting'. He was best-known for the illustrations and woodcuts he produced for the Illustrated London News. Frederick Richard Pickersgill RA (1820 - 1900) was born into an artistic family, and studied under his maternal uncle, Witherington, a portrait painter and Royal Academician. He entered the Academy Schools in 1839, sending his first picture for exhibition there in the same year. He became a noted history painter, favouring as well subjects from literature, the poets and the classics. Other subjects were from contemporary life, and from the bible. He became a full Academician in 1850, in which year he painted Samson Betrayed, considered his masterpiece.

Sir John Gilbert (1817 - 1897) taught himself to paint. Skilled in several media, he gained the nickname, 'the Scott of painting'. He was best-known for the illustrations and woodcuts he produced for the Illustrated London News. Frederick Richard Pickersgill RA (1820 - 1900) was born into an artistic family, and studied under his maternal uncle, Witherington, a portrait painter and Royal Academician. He entered the Academy Schools in 1839, sending his first picture for exhibition there in the same year. He became a noted history painter, favouring as well subjects from literature, the poets and the classics. Other subjects were from contemporary life, and from the bible. He became a full Academician in 1850, in which year he painted Samson Betrayed, considered his masterpiece.

A scene in the Marble Hall of Buckingham Palace, with Victoria and the Royal Family receiving 26 Coldstream Guards who had been wounded fighting in the Crimean War. Sir John Gilbert RA (1817-97) sketched this scene from a verbal description, to create a wood engraving for the Illustrated London News for 10th March 1855. He then enlarged the scene for a watercolour, using photographs of the soldiers for accuracy. When it was exhibited at the Old Watercolour Society exhibition in 1856, it caused a sensation, and was purchased for the Royal Collection, probably by Edward, Prince of Wales. This very large chromolithographic copy of the watercolour is still less than half the size of the painting. In 2019 Queen Elizabeth II was photographed examining the painting when it was included in the exhibition to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria, part of the Summer Opening of Buckingham Palace.
