Landscape after Salomon Gessner (1730-88), Swiss artist and poet. His landscapes were inspired by the study of 17th century artists such Poussin, Gaspar Dughet and Claude, and renew the Arcadian pastoral worlds of those artists. Rare print by Zurich-based printmaker and publisher Heinrich Pfeninger (1749-1815). Private Collection

Etching, platemark 170 x 250mm (6¾ x 10"), with large margins.
Plate seven from Salomon Gessner's series of etchings 'Folge der Landschaften in antikem Geschmack'. Gessner (1730-88) achieved international fame as a writer and etched illustrations to his texts as well as producing standalone series of etchings such as these, as well as paintings and drawings (of which the most significant collection is in the Kunsthaus Zurich). His son Conrad Gessner was also a significant artist.
