Seleucus giving up his wife for his son: classic interior with prince Antiochus I Soter lying ill on a canopied bed at right, his father Seleucus I pointing in despair at the crown and sceptre on a table at centre, his father's wife Stratonice standing by, the doctor Eristratos seen standing behind. Antiochus I Soter (c. 324/3 – 261 BC) was struck down by a mysterious illness. Erasistratus (c. 304 – c. 250 BC), Greek anatomist and royal physician under Seleucus I Nicator of Syria, realised that the illness of Antiochus was lovesickness for his stepmother Stratonice (c. 320 BC - 254 BC), by observing that Antiochus's pulse rate rises when ever he sees her. Seleucus I Nicator (c. 358 – 281 BC) gave up his young wife to save his son and in 294 BC Antiochus married his stepmother.

Lithograph. 541 x 356mm. Uncut sheet..
Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater (1756-1829), was a noted British eccentric, and supporter of natural theology. Egerton was known for giving dinner parties for dogs, where the dogs were dressed in the finest fashions of the day, down to fancy miniature shoes. Each day Egerton wore a new pair of shoes and he arranged the worn shoes into rows, so that he could measure the passing time. An animal lover, Egerton kept partridges and pigeons with clipped wings in his garden, allowing him to shoot them despite failing eyesight. Egerton never married, and upon his death, his title became extinct. He bequeathed to the British Museum the valuable Egerton Manuscripts, consisting of 67 manuscripts dealing with the literature of France and Italy.

Gerard pinx.t. A. Easton Sculp.t.
Published April 9th 1816 by Edw.d Orme, Bond Street, corner of Brook Street, London.
Stipple, with very large margins. 260 x 205mm (10¼ x 8").
François Gérard's famous portrait of Marshal Michel Ney (17690815), in ceremonial uniform. He fought for Napoleon from begining to end: after his command of French rear-guard on the Retreat from Moscow in 1812 he was jokingly referred to as 'the last Frenchman on Russian soil. Although he persuaded the emperor to abdicate and accept his first exile in 1814 and prepared a force to stop Napoleon reaching Paris during the Hundred Days, Ney joined with Napoleon in 1815. At the Battle of Waterloo, seeing the day was lost, Ney led a final charge, shouting to his men 'Come see how a marshal of France dies!'. However he survived, only to be shot for treason, one of very few of Napoleon's generals not to be exonerated by the restored Bourbon monarchy.
Gérard's oil remained in the family until the death of the 6th (and last) Prince of Moskow and his daughter, selling at auction for $242,500 in New York, 2013.

Lithograph, sheet 290 x 220mm. 11½ x 8¾".
Niccolo Paganini (1784 - 1840), Italian violinist. Paganini established himself as Italy's greatest violinist in solo performances between 1810 and 1828. He embarked on a tour of Europe in 1829, reaching London in 1834 where he played to rapturous crowds. Plagued by ill-health, which he treated with mercury and opium, Paganini's gaunt appearance appealed to the romantic sensibilities of his audiences. He was known for his virtuoso playing but also composed music, mostly for his own use.

[Two men seated at a table.]
Terburg, Pinx. Van Somer, fec. [lower left of image.]
F. de Wit Exc. [lower centre of image.]
Mezzotint, scarce, 265 x 220mm (10½ x 8½"). Cut to image.
A man sits disconsolately at a table, absent-mindedly toying with his snuffbox, with a friend looking at him across the table and a standing figure holding a straw-covered wine bottle. Engraved by Dutch mezzotinter Jan van Somer (c.1645-99) after Gerard Ter Borch's 'Scene at an Inn' (c. 1648/50, private collection). Unusually, Van Somer also made another print of the same scene, but in reverse. It has been said of the painting from which this print derives that 'no painting in Ter Borch's oeuvre conveys with such overwhelming power the emotion of loneliness and despair'. The model for the seated figure on the right was a member of the Spanish delegation to Munster for the signing of the 1648 treaty which made the United Netherlands independent from Spain. The same sitter appears in Ter Borch's famous painting of the ratification of that treaty.
Hollstein: 62; for the painting see 'Gerard ter Borch' (NGA, Washington, 2005, cat.15).

George Wilson (1766-1839), known as the 'Blackheath Pedestrian' for his attempt to walk a thousand miles around the heath in 20 days for a prize of £100. He failed because the authorities charged him with disturbing the peace because of the crowds that followed him. Although he was acquitted his arrest made the feat impossible, so he lost the prize, but a collection at the London Stock Exchange matched the £100 within two hours.
