Peter Simon Pallas (1741-1811) the German zoologist and botanist who worked in Russia. In 1767 he was invited by Catherine II of Russia to become professor at the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences, and from 1768 to 1774 he led an expedition to central Russian provinces, collecting natural history specimens. He settled in St. Petersburg, becoming a favourite of Catherine II and teaching natural history to the Grand Dukes Alexander and Constantine. She gave him a large estate at Simferopol, where he lived until the death of his second wife. He was then granted permission to leave Russia by Emperor Alexander and he returned to Berlin. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia)) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.
