A full-length portrait of Charles Cornwallis (1738-1805), 1st Marquess Cornwallis, leaning on long cane, eyes to front, wearing uniform, cocked hat and long boots, troops in landscape at right. Cornwallis is best remembered as one of the leading generals in the American War of Independence. Despite his surrender at Yorktown in 1781, Cornwallis continued his military career, becoming Governor-General of India in 1786.
