After less than a year he was driven out by pro-French factions, after which he served the Venetians. [Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy.]

Emmanuel Philibert (1528-80), Duke of Savoy from 1553 until his death. At the time his duchy was occupied by the French so he entered the service of his cousin Philip II of Spain, becoming Governor of the Netherlands (1555-59). In 1557 he led the Spanish invasion of France: in the peace talks of 1559 Savoy was returned to him and he married the daughter of the King of France. In 1580 he was a claimant to the throne of Portugal, but lost out to Philip. He moved his capital from Chambéry to Turin, where he died and was buried in the Chapel of the Holy Shroud in Turin Cathedral. Alessandro Farnese (1545-92), Duke of Parma & Piacenza and Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, best known for his successful campaign against the Dutch Revolt (1578-92). He also fought at the Battle of Lepanto (1571) and was in command of the armies that would have been landed in England by the Spanish Armada of 1588. Henry, Prince of Joinville, Duke of Guise, Count of Eu (1550-88). He helped plan the infamous St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre of 1572 and in 1576 he founded the Catholic League to prevent the heir, King Henry of Navarre, head of the Huguenot movement, from succeeding to the French throne. Having earned the emnity of Catherine de' Medici, he was assassinated by the bodyguards of her son, King Henry III. Andreas graf von Sonnenberg (1472-1511), imperial general under Emperors Frederick III & Maximillian I, fighting the French and Turks and leading the Imperial troops in the Landshut War of Succession, in which he was captured. He was paroled, returning home and fighting no more. In 1511 he insulted Felix von Werdenberg, who arranged his assassination: he died from over twenty lance and sword wounds.
