Philip Thomas Howard, Dominican and cardinal, commonly called the 'Cardinal of Norfolk' [1629 - 1694]. Born at Arundel House, the third son of Henry Frederick Howard, Earl of Arundel and Surrey and head of the great Catholic House of Norfolk, restored in 1660. At the age of sixteen he joined the Dominican Order in Italy. He was thenceforth wholly devoted to the conversion of England and to the progress of his order in that country. In the reign of Charles II Father Howard was made grand almoner to Queen Catherine of Braganza. He left England when he foresaw the crisis of James II's reign and died in Rome in 1694.
