Portrait of Sir Marc Isambard Brunel [1769 - 1849], civil engineer, engraved from the portrait by Drummond (London, National Portrait Gallery). Brunel is surrounded by objects alluding to his profession and achievements, including a miner's lamp, cotton-winding machine and a model of a lighthouse. On the right is the Thames Tunnel: the portrait was painted c.1835, half-way through its construction. This mezzotint was published in 1846, three years after the tunnel was opened to the public. By this time Brunel's career was over, having been almost totally paralysed on his right side by a stroke in 1845. For proof state see ref. 47314.

Adam Walker (1731-1821), an inventor, writer, and lecturer in sciences, especially astronomy. Among his inventions was the 'Eidouranion', an orrery that combined mechanical movement with back projection. Walker built one measuring 27 feet in diameter, which he used to accompany his lectures on astronomy in the 1780s. He showed it at the English Opera House in the Strand and at the Royal Theatre. On the 1st October 1806 the British Leeward island packet ‘Windsor Castle’ was sailing to Barbados when it was attacked by a French privateer, the ‘Jeune-Richard’. Despite being out-manned and outgunned the English fought off the French boarding party with pikes then followed the retreating pirates back onto their schooner, capturing it. Despite killing over twenty of the Frenchmen the English were still outnumbered by their prisoners, but the ‘Windsor Castle’ managed to reach Barbados safely. Frankau, state ii of ii; NMM PAI6156.
