A bird's-eye view on the Dardanelles, with the two heavily-defended forts that controlled access to the Sea of Mamora and Constantinople, which can be seen in the background. A faithful copy of Guillaume-Joseph Grelot's "Relation Nouvelle d'un Voyage de Constantinople", 1680. This is from "L'Atlas Curieux ou Le Monde Réprésente dans des Cartes Générales et Particuliéres du Ciel et de la Terre...etc", which was first issued in 5 parts from 1700 to 1708, but this is the issue of 1705 in two volumes.

Titlepage from Nicolas de Fer's atlas of charts of the French coasts. de Fer (1646-1720) was a cartographer, engraver and publisher who issued altogether more than 600 separate maps, including atlases, sheet maps and large wall maps. He gained a great reputation in his lifetime and was appointed 'Geographer to the King' in 1690.
