Twenty-one plates from a set of twenty-five engravings derived from Charles-Antonie Coypel's (1694-1752) first major commission: a series of tapestry cartoons illustrating scenes from Cervantes' 'Don Quixote' (Compiègne, musée Antoine Vivenel). These prints reproducing the designs were published by Louis Suruge at various points between 1723 and 1736, and were copied several times by other engravers.

Engravings by van Schley, Picart and Tanjé after Charles Antoine Coypel. Coypel was commissioned to create designs for a set of tapestries relating the story of Don Quixote in 1720, with a contract for engraving them following in 1721. The engravings were very profitable, and this smaller set was published later, probably to illustrate an edition of Cervantes' picaresque novel.

Decrepitude, assisted by Madness, dresses in an extravagant costume with outsized beauty spots; cupid with arrow overhead. Allegorical scene after Charles-Antoine Coypel (1694-1752), son of a successful painter who enjoyed early success, inheriting his father's position of painter to Philippe II, duc d'Orléans and becoming favourite painter of Louis XV's queen, Maria Leczinska. Coypel's moralizing genre scenes such as the pastel from which this print derives, are some of his most original works.

The identification of the sitter as Madame de Mouchy, first suggested in 'Catalogue manuscrit de l'oeuvre gravé de et après Charles Coypel', is now accepted by most scholars. An Italian print engraved after the same portrait in 1766 wrongly identifies the sitter as the Marquess of Pompadour. After Charles Coypel (1694 - 1752).

Susanna accused by the elders. A classical setting Susanna, standing with her arms outstretched in the centre. The two elders pointing at her with crowds surrounding them, with many people expressing grief. Susannah was a biblical figure, a virtuous woman who refused the advances of two elders. In revenge she was brought to trial and condemned to death, but rescued by Daniel, sent from God. Lettered below with titles and a dedication to Philippe II, Duc d'Orléans, Regent of France.
