Pair of photogravures on india paper, very scarce signed artist's presentation proofs; each image approx. 715 x 455mm, 28¼ x 18". Unexamined out of original hogarth frames; fine impressions with full margins.
Magnificent full-length portraits of King George V (1865 - 1936: reigned 1910-36), and Queen Mary (1867 - 1953); George in naval officer's uniform in front of billowing flag, on the deck of a warship. The King's portrait is dedicated by the artist in pencil to lower right margin: 'To Admiral the Marquess of Bristol - with every good wish from A.S.C. Xmas 1913.' As the second son of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, George V had not expected to become king. He had enjoyed a long and successful career in the Navy before his accession in 1910. His conscientious and unpretentious approach to his duties as king provided stability during an unsettled period. His Consort Mary Victoria of Teck, whom George married in 1893 when he was Duke of York, had earlier been engaged to his elder brother the Duke of Clarence, who died suddenly in 1892. Patriotic portraits of the Royal couple published at a time of great uncertainty on the eve of the outbreak of the First World War. The King's likeness after Sir Arthur Stockdale Cope (1857 - 1940); Mary's after Sir (Samuel Henry) William Llewellyn (1858 - 1941), President of the Royal Academy. The painting is in the Royal Collection.
