A view of Canbury House, Kingston-on-Thames. An Italianate villa seen from the garden, with a church beyond on the left. After an original drawing by John Constable from p.37 of 'Constable's sketchbook' of July 1835, consisting of 50 sketches in pencil, pen and ink, and watercolour. This particular sketch was made on July 27th 1835, a date that falls within the visit which Constable paid to George Constable at Arundel or his subsequent journeys to accompany Maria to and from the Fishers' house at Kingston.

Alfred-Louis Brunet-Debaines (1845-1939), French painter & printmaker. From 1884 to 1897 he lived in Britain, and in 1878-9 and 1887-8 his views of London, Oxford and Edinburgh appeared in portfolio. Based on Constable's oil exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1820, titled 'Landcape', showing young anglers around Stratford Mill on the Stour, about two miles west of East Bergholt, looking south toward Gun Hill. The old papermill was replaced about 1850 by a macaroni factory!
