At top right religious men gather around a table in consternation at the theories of Nicolaus Copernicus (1473 – 1543), the first astronomer to formulate a comprehensive heliocentric cosmology, which displaced the Earth from the centre of the universe. A cityscape below. The son of of a merchant in Gdansk (Danzig), Chodowiecki made more than 2000 etchings, mainly illustrations for books by German writers like Lessing, Schiller, Goethe, and Klopstock. He also illustrated scientific books and translations of the works of foreign writers.
