Hand-coloured lithograph, watermark 1817, sheet 315 x 445mm (12½ x 17½") with very large margins. Slight mount burn around image, slightly stained on edge of margins.
A scene with two women sitting in a street and grooming dogs on their laps, under a parasol and by a sign for their business. Two groomed dogs are visible in the right foreground, further two in a kennel on the left, with pedestrians and a carriage in the background.

Original etching by John Chalon (1738 - 1795). Born in Amsterdam, Chalon came to work in London to take advantage of the strong market in prints in England at the time. He is best known for his copies of Rembrandt's etched works. In 1802, after the artist's death, C. Josi published 'The Compleat Work of Etchings By John Chalon'. Limited to an edition of 50, it contains 100 of his plates, including this one.

The Turnpike Gate [&] The Ale House Door

Scarce pair of mezzotints, printed in colours and hand finish. Each 580 x 490mm (22¾ x 19¼"). Small margins.
The Turnpike Gate: A two-horse cart containing a man, woman an child, stopping at a turnpike gate. The man is paying the toll to the gate keeper; a foal stands behind the mare attached to the cart; behind the cart are two men - one with a spade, the other with a pick axe across his shoulder. The Ale House Door: Scene outside a county inn which has on its signboard a portrait of George III, with 'T.E. Jones' above and 'Fine Amber Ale & c.' below. By the door and two men, a young women serving a soldier with ale, and a child; an old woman looks out fom a lattice window. Charles Turner Engraver. Whitman: 696. 697.
