Petrus Plancius (1552-1622), a Dutch astronomer & cartographer, a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church and one of the founders of the Dutch East India Company (V.O.C.). His map of the East Indies, 'Insulae Moluccae...', c.1594, is credited with helping break the Portuguese monopoly of the routes to the Spice Islands
