Endymion the shepherd, in Greek mythology, seated sleeping with a dog next to him and his staff. The myth of Endymion being not dead by endlessly asleep, ensured that scenes of Selene and Endymion were popular; this later became the moon goddess Diana and Endymion in the Renaissance.
