[Alexander and Hephaistion Visit the Family of Darius in their Tent after the Battle of Issus.]
[Alexander and Hephaistion Visit the Family of Darius in their Tent after the Battle of Issus.]
C. le Brun Pinxit, G. Edelinck Sculpsit.
[n.d, 1675.]
Rare engraving. On two sheets, 640 x 420 (25¼ x 16½") & 640 x 520mm (25¼ x 20½"). Trimmed at bottom, losing dedication, title and publisher's address.
Sisygambis, mother of Darius III, prostrates herself before Hephaestion, mistaking him for Alexander. Instead of flying into a rage, Alexander dismisses this error as of no importance and puts the family under his protection. Prints of this size were unusual during this period, due to expense. This engraving of a painting belonging to Louis XIV was published as a propaganda piece, lauding the magnificence of royalty. Gérard Edelinck, the engraver, has also chosen to make dividing line jagged, so the join would disappear in the darkest parts of the image. The original oil, painted c.1660, is still at Versailles.

Engraving after one of the famous series of 'The Battle of Alexander' by Charles Le Brun (1619-90), which invited comparison between the ancient ruler and the French monarch Louis XIV. When the engraver Girard Audran (1640-1703) returned to Paris after a period of study in Rome at the studio of Carlo Maratti, he was engaged to engrave these four enormous pictures, which took him six years and for which he was paid over 10,000 francs. The series is the masterpiece of an important engraver, and earned him admission to the Académie Royale.

Samuel Brown and opened in 1823, costing £30,000. From 1825 steam packet boats offered excursions to the Isle of Wight from the pier. However the exposed nature of Brighton beach meant that the pier was damaged by storms in 1824, 1833 and 1836. It was overshadowed by the opening of the West Pier in 1866, and remained open until 1896, when a survey found the head was nearly seven feet off perpendicular. Another storm destroyed it later in the year.

Extraordinary long view of Istanbul originally published in the 'Reizen' (1698) of Dutch artist Cornelis de Bruyn (1652-1726/7). De Bruyn first visited Egypt and Asia Minor in the 1670s, where he gathered the information that informed the travelogue (with over 200 plates) 'Reizen van Corn. de Bruyn door de vermaardste deelen van Klein Asia, de eylanden Scio, Rhodus, Cyprus enz. mitsg. de voornaamste steden van Aegypten, Syrien en Palestina', published in Delft in 1698. After supervising the publication and its French translation (Delft, 1700), de Bruyn set off on another long voyage, from 1701-08. This time he travelled to Russia, Persia and the East Indies, and the travels led to another large volume, 'orn.de Bruins Reizen over Moskovie door Persie en Indie, verrykt met 300 konstplaten, vertoonende . . . voor al derz. oudheden, en wel voornamentlyk heel uitvoerig die van het . . .hof van Persepolis' (Amsterdam, 1711). Thereafter he restricted his travels to visiting friends in the Netherlands.

S. Maria Magdalena
C le Brun pinxit:. Sold by I Beckett at y.e golden head in y.e Old Bailey.
[n.d.] 1798.
Mezzotint, trimmed. 350 x 260mm (13¾ x 10¼"). Very small margins. Laid on backing paper at corners. Loss to bottom left corner affecting the title area. Minor tears to middle of left and right edge.
A portrait of Mary Magdalene, one of Jesus' earliest and closest followers. Mentioned in each of the four gosples, she is mentioned by name more than any other non-family women. As a figure in Christianity the mythos of Mary Magdalene has a complex history riddled with long-standing inaccuracies, the most successful being that she was a prostitute.

[Stanislaus Augustus Poniatowski. King of Poland.]
[Stanislaus Augustus Poniatowski. King of Poland.]
Le Brun pinx.t D. Orme sc.t.
[n.d., c.1792.]
Stipple, rare. Sheet size: 127 x 100mm (5 x 4"). Trimmed inside platemark. Laid on backing sheet.
A half length portrait of Stanislaus August Poniatowski (1732 - 1798), inclined slightly to left, with powdered hair, fur coat with a star of the White Eagle, and a white ruffle. In an oval. Poniatowski was the last King and Grand Duke of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth (1764–95) and was recognised as a great patron of the arts and sciences and a supporter of progressive reforms. Arriving at the Russian imperial court in Saint Petersburg in 1755, he became romantically involved with the twenty-six-year-old Catherine Alexeievna (the future Empress Catherine the Great). With her support, in 1764 he was elected king of Poland. Against expectations, he attempted to reform and strengthen the ailing Commonwealth. His efforts were met with external opposition from Prussia, Russia and Austria, all interested in keeping the Commonwealth weak. The reforms were overthrown following a succession of wars which led to the Partitions of Poland, marking the end of the Commonwealth. Stripped of all meaningful power, Poniatowski abdicated in November 1795 and spent the last years of his life in semi-captivity in Saint Petersburg.
