To the Worshipful Company of the Mistery of Goldsmiths in the City of London this plate is Humbly Dedicated by their most humble Servant G.Bockman. St. Dunstan was well-extracted, being related to King Athelston.
B. Pinxit & fecit 1743. Trimmed to plate. St. Dunstan (c.909-88), abbot of Glastonbury, bishop of Worcester, bishop of London, and archbishop of Canterbury, as well as serving as minister of state to several Saxon kings. A late C11th legend tells that the Devil tempted Dunstan disguised as a woman, but was caught by the nose with the tongs shown in this portrait. Ex: Collection of The Hon. C. Lennox-Boyd.
