Michiel de Ruyter (1607-1676), one of the greatest Dutch admirals. De Ruyter is most famous for his brilliant victories in the Second and Third Anglo-Dutch Wars with England, the best known probably being the Raid on the Medway. Engraved by Abraham Blooteling (1640-90), Dutch printmaker who spent time in London (c.1672-8) where he created some of the early masterpieces in the new printmaking technique of mezzotint, before returning to his native Amsterdam.
