Three Circassians wearing fur hats, from 'Journal of a Residence in Circassia during the years 1837, 1838 and 1839', by James Stanislaus Bell (1796-1858). In 1836 'the 'Vixen', a ship owned by Bell, a Scottish merchant, breached the Russian blockade of Circassia and was seized. Different accounts describe the shipment as either salt or guns. The Vixen incident nearly led to war between Britain and Russia at the time, and certainly contributed to the Crimean War a decade later. The following year Bell travelled to Circassia to try to recoup on his losses. Bell was looked upon as a spy!

Claremont is a beautiful garden surrounding a small lake and featuring an unusual grass amphitheatre. The garden's creation and development has involved great names in garden history, including Sir John Vanbrugh, Charles Bridgeman, William Kent and 'Capability' Brown. In 1726 it was described as 'the noblest of any in Europe' and the garden today is of national importance. The highlight as seen in the upper part of this map is Belvedere, which was built to a design by Sir John Vanbrugh, and from the first floor views could be enjoyed of the whole garden and across many miles of countryside.

[The Aveunue of Fountains, Pratolino]
S. D. Bella [n.d., c.1650-56]
Etching, platemark 255 x 375mm (10 x 14¾")
One from the set of six views that Stefano della Bella (1610-64) produced of the villa at Pratolino, near Florence. Built for Francesco I de'Medici in the sixteenth century, the villa was praised by Montaigne, amongst others. This view shows the spectacular path from the garden to the villa, along which the visitor walks beneath a succession of fountain jets. After being left unattended for much of the eighteenth century, the villa was demolished in 1820 and the garden was redesigned. It is now part of the Villa Demidoff, as it was named by a Russian industrialist who owned the site in the nineteenth century.
