Frederick William I (German: Friedrich Wilhelm I) (1688 – 1740) of the House of Hohenzollern, was the King in Prussia and Elector of Brandenburg (as Frederick William II) from 1713 until his death. Known popularly as the 'Soldatenkönig' (the soldier king), he married Sophia Dorothea of Hannover, daughter of George I of England, and transformed Prussia into a military power. He was father of Frederick II ('the Great'). After German painter Friedrich Wilhelm Weidemann (1668 - 1750).
