Paul Gavarni (real name Sulpice-Guillaume Chevalier, 1804-1866) came to England in 1847 to escape an unhappy marriage. He travelled to Scotland with Bouquet, and then published a folio of his paintings of the scenery and the people, including this famous portrait of a bagpiper.
