Joseph Auguste Jules Laurens (1825 - 1901) travelled with the geographer Xavier Hommaire de Hell on a scientific journey to Turkey and Persia, making over a thousand drawings of the sites, costumes and people he encountered. After Hommaire died of cholera in 1848 Laurens sent his notes back to his widow in Paris who completed a full account of their travels, 'Voyage en Turquie et en Perse, exeŽcuteŽ par ordre du Gouvernement Francais pendant les anneŽes 1846, 1847 et 1848', containing many lithographs after Laurens.
