The first Norfolk Bridge opened in 1833. An Elegant chain link suspension bridge across the River Adur was the design of W. Tierney Clark and Captain Samuel Browne and built in 1832 by Bernard and Edward Howard. The northern tower arch had a decorative lion and the southern had a horse.
