John Flamsteed, 1646-1719, was the first astronomer royal: he moved into Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park in July 1676, where he lived until 1684. The Observatory had been designed by Sir Christopher Wren and was the first purpose-built scientific research facility in Britain.
