Etching with aquatint. Sheet 254 x 205mm.
Dr Charles Thomas Haden (1786-1824), who helped popularise the user of the stethoscope in Britain. He was also a friend of Jane Austen: in 1815, he was called to attend Henry Austen, who had developed an acute pulmonary complaint. Jane was staying with her brother and was impressed with his efficiency, describing him as a 'wonderful nondescript creature on two legs, something between a man and an Angel'.
