A portrait of Scottish traveller and author Patrick Brydone (1736-1818), reclining on a sofa in an interior. Chemical apparatus is seen on the table in the centre, with a large white lily to the left and a map depicting Sicily and Malta on the wall behind. Brydone's travels in Sicily and Malta with author William Beckord formed the subject of his book, ‘A Tour through Sicily and Malta, in a Series of Letters to William Beckford, Esq., of Somerly in Suffolk,’ published in 1773. The book was so well received by the reading public, that it went through several editions in England in his lifetime, and was also translated into French and German.
