The discovery of America: Amerigo Vespucci, holding a banner and staff, addresses a naked female (representing America) on a hammock. Vespucci's ship is on the far left, and wild animals and a group of cannibals (roasting body parts over a fire) populate the landscape. Plate one from 'Nova Reperta', a series of twenty prints illustrating new inventions and discoveries, after designs by Jan van der Straet (Stradanus).
