Allegorical figure, with helmet, spear and shield, associated with Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury (1671 - 1713), philosopher and writer on the fine arts. Illustration to Savérien's 'Histoire des philosophes modernes', second volume, Paris: Brunet, 1761. After François Boucher (1703 - 1770) by Jean Charles François (1717 - 1769), printmaker. He invented the crayon manner technique of etching in 1757.
