Etching, contemporary copy; platemark 290 x 420mm (11½ x 16½"). Small margins.
Christ on the cross between two thieves on left, surrounded by saints and apostles. Several groups of figures in foreground with rocky landscape behind. Thoroughly reworked later state of the 1517 etching by Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533), the first Dutch artist to establish an international reputation in his lifetime. Initially influenced by his contemporary Albrecht Dürer, Leyden in later life drew more upon examples from the Italian Renaissance.
