The Papal Basilica of Saint Lawrence outside the Walls, Rome. Engraved after a painting by landscape artist Gaspar Poussin (whose works served as important models for the nascent British landscape school of the 18th century) by Maria Katharina Prestel (1747-94). Prestel was a former student of her husband Johann Gottlieb Prestel (1739-1808), together with whom she published three collections of facsimile drawings in Germany. In 1786 they separated and Maria Katharina moved to London, establishing herself independently as an artist and printmaker specialising in aquatint, as here.
Provenance: Torridon Lovelace/King Family.
