The first group of Indians who qualified in Western medicine; in 1846 Dwaraka Nath Bose, Bola Nath Bose and Gopal Chunder Seal passed the examination for the Member of the Royal College of Surgeons and returned to India to join the Medical Service. Soorji Coomar Goodeve Chuckerbutty remained in London, recieved an MD from University College London and become the first Indian to pass the medical exam for the Indian Medical Service. He went on to become Professor of the Medical College and chair of Materia Medica from 1864 till his death in 1874.
