A three-quarter length portrait of George William Manby (1765 - 1854), militia captain and the barrack master at Great Yarmouth (from 1803). He is seen holding an illustration of the 'Manby apparatus' his invention for saving lives from ships wrecked close to shore. It was first successfully used at Yarmouth in 1808 and rapidly became widespread.
