The discovery of America: Amerigo Vespucci, holding a banner and staff, addresses a naked female (representing America) on a hammock. Vespucci's ship is on the far left, and wild animals and a group of cannibals (roasting body parts over a fire) populate the landscape. Plate one from 'Nova Reperta', a series of twenty prints illustrating new inventions and discoveries, after designs by Jan van der Straet (Stradanus). This impression is from the first publication by Philips Galle (a later edition was published by his son Thedor).
