Prince William, Duke of Gloucester (1689-1700), eldest son of Queen Anne and Prince George. William had been ill in his early years, and died from suspected smallpox shortly after his eleventh birthday. His death led to a succession crisis which settled the British throne on the Electress Sophia of Hanover and her Protestant heirs.
