A Son Altesse Royale Monsieur frere unique du Roy [...]
Se vend rue St Jacques aux 2 piliers d'or [in image lower right]
Rare etching and engraving, sheet 455 x 585mm (18 x 23"). Trimmed to platemark; false margins added.
Bacchus and Ariadne on the island of Naxos, Hymen behind them, surrounded by satyrs, putti and garlands, Bacchus' chariot on left. Engraved by Antoine Coypel (1661-1722) with Girard Audran (1640-1703), reversing Coypel's own painting (now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art). Having begun his career with royal commissions such decorating the chateua of Choisy near Paris, a lack of official commissions in the 1690s led Coypel to alter his style to appeal to private patrons, moving towards cheerful mythological subjects such as this.
Ex Collection Duke of Westminster.
