Mars, in armour, marches, encouraged by the Fury of War Alecto while Venus tries to restrain him and Europe (on the left) throws up her hands in despair. On the right, monsters symbolizing Plague and Famine, and in the lower right cower personifications of Harmony, Fecundity, Maternity and Charity. Large engraving after Rubens' allegory 'The Horrors of War', 1637-8 (Florence, Palazzo Pitti). A studio copy is in the National Gallery, London. Engraved and published by Ferdinando Gregori (1743?-1804), reproductive engraver based in Florence.
