Scarce mezzotint, platemark 560 x 455mm (22 x 18"). Creases; repaired break along platemark; repaired tear into title area; pinhole on right. Fine impression but damaged.
Double portrait, supposedly of Miss Murray as Hero, sitting in a bower to left, holding fan, in profile to left, listening to Ursula who talks eagerly, and Mrs Jordan as Beatrice, listening to them discussing her unobserved from behind a classical urn. One of few large engravings after Henry Fuseli (1741 - 1825), Swiss painter of heroic, literary and surreal themes who came to London in 1764. He became professor of Painting (1799-1805) and then Keeper (1804-25) at the Royal Academy, where he taught a whole generation of artists, including Constable, Haydon and Lawrence.
