[Man with a feathered cap]
Etching, platemark 210 x 160mm (8¼ x 6¼"). Proof before letters. Crease; foxing to edges; two collectors' stamps verso (one unidentified, the other Neville D. Goldsmid).
Fine portrait believed to be by Jacob Frey (1681-1752), engraver and publisher. Born Lucerne, Frey moved to Rome in 1702, where he began by publishing his own plates and later began publishing works of others. He seems to have been the preferred engraver of the great Baroque painter Carlo Maratta. Formerly in the collection of Neville Davison Goldsmid (1814-75), director of gas company Goldsmid & Co., whose collection included paintings by Vermeer, Hals, and other Dutch masters.
