Engraving, sheet 440 x 515mm (17¼ x 20¼"). Trimmed inside platemark and around text; folds where previously framed with text concealed.
Family scene illuminated by a dramatic shaft of light. The French painter and draughtsman Jean Pillement (1728-1808), whose Rococo decorative designs were immensely influential, worked in England 1754-1763. During this time his fellow Frenchman Simon Ravenet engraved a series of large engravings, to which this print belongs. It is one of few indoor scenes by Pillement, and like other prints in the series such as 'La Gassette de Londre' (in which a man reads aloud from a newspaper), showed him adapting to popular English domestic subject matter.
See Maria Gordon-Smith, 'Pillement', pp.72-3; for another from the same series see ref. 11601.
