Rare engraving, sheet 295 x 240mm (11½ x 9½"). Trimmed to platemark top and bottom.
Old woman counting rosary beads, after the Venetian painter Giuseppe Nogari (1699-1766). Nogari's master is believed to have been Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, whose influential portrait busts were surely an influence on Nogari on this evidence. Nogari was popular with patrons from Italy, Germany and England. He worked for the British Consul in Venice, Joseph Smith (also an important patron to Canaletto) and also contributed to the decorations of the Palazzo Reale in Turin, which may be relevant to the Turin-based printmaker Pietro Peiroleri engraving this print.
