[A Man and a Woman of Oonalashka]
Etching and stipple with hand-colouring, platemark 340 x 250mm (13½ x 9¾"). Trimmed close to platemark.
Natives of Unalaska, one of the Fox Islands group of the Aleutian Islands, part of the US state of Alaska. The island was visited by Cook in 1788 (who spelled it Oonalashka), although this etching was probably copied from an engraving after William Alexander which appeared in Martin Sauer's account of the travels in Russia by the explorer Joseph Billings (1758-1806).
