A head and shoulders portrait of British soldier and General Lieutenant-General Sir John Moore (1761- 1809), in military uniform, facing the viewer directly. A small vignette depicting the Battle of Corunna is below the portrait, all of which is surrounded by brightly coloured thistles. Moore, also know as Moore of Corunna, is best known for his military training reforms and for his death at the Battle of Corunna, in which he defeated a French army under Marshal Soult during the Peninsular War.
