S. Memoria. Paulia. Pompilia. Benedicta.
Litho. Newlands. 1829.
Lithograph. On India. Sheet: 290 x 220mm, (11½ x 8¾"). Large margins.
A view of a cave, the entrance of which is decorated with a pediment and frieze. The printmaker Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850) probably visited the site when in Switzerland in the 1820s. Whitby was the widow of Cornwallis' flag captain, John Whitby, who died in 1806. Following her husband's death, Whitby spent much of her time with Cornwallis, who left his estate to her on his death in 1819. Whitby was an amateur lithographer who established a private press at Newlands.
Ex collection of Christopher Lennox-Boyd.
