Baron Nelson, of the Nile, and of Burnham Thorpe in the County of Norfolk.
Hand coloured mezzotint, very scarce. Framed. Platemark: 170 x 125mm (8 x 5"). Unexamined out of frame.
A full-length portrait of Admiral Lord Nelson (1758 - 1805), standing on the deck of a ship, directed to the right, his right sleeve pinned to his breast, and his left resting on his sword-hilt. He is seen wearing a naval uniform and a cocked hat. To the right is a gun, a flag to the left and the ship 'L'Orient' exploding in the background to right. Nelson was gazetted Baron of the Nile a few moths after the battle (1798). Up to this date he had spent little time in England and in consequence, very few portraits were known of him.
