[Woman in silk dress.]
Mezzotint, 330 x 270mm (13 x 10½"). Trimmed to plate; creasing on left. Rare.
Early mezzotint by Wallerant Vaillant (1623-77). Born in Lille, Vaillant worked in Antwerp, Paris and (primarily) Amsterdam. On a visit to Frankfurt in 1658 he met Prince Rupert of the Rhine, who was experimenting with mezzotint. Adopting the technique, Vaillant became the first professional mezzotint engraver, using it to reproduce his own designs and those of other artists. Vaillant also painted, specialising in portraits.
